Dream Machines Buyers Guide

The new, 2002 issue of Dream Machines, published by Guitar Player Magazine features the dreamy Gretsch re-issues of the ‘57 Eddie Cochran Western and ‘58 Stephen Stills White Falcon guitars! In fact, the gorgeous 6120W-57 even graces the sleek glossy cover! Be sure to pick up a copy of this fantastic resource just as soon as you can!

WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHERS

Dream Machines is not a typical gear guide. But-duh-you already know that. The gorgeous photo fest you’re holding in your hands doesn’t look anything like the pages o’lists that, by necessity, crowd multi-product buyer’s guides. By limiting our scope to some of the mid and high-end tools that guitarists lust over, we ensured Dream Machines could benefit from beautifully spacious layouts that evoke the look and feel of expensive coffee table books. In other words, there’s more vibe and sparkle to drool over.

We also included some valuable articles from past issues of Guitar Player magazine that will hip you to the tonal properties of tubes and help you identify the elements of excellent electric an acoustic guitars. For a further thrill factor, we reveal the gear used by blues legends and current guitar stars to construct their exceptional sounds. Hopefully, you’ll be able to put down Dream Machines long enough to get out and make your own kick-ass noises and/or beautifully melodic tones.

And when you fall so knocked-out in love with one of the tools in these pages, end your blissful suffering by turning to the manufacturer’s listings. There you’ll find all the necessary contact info to claim the object of your desire.

Gretsch 6120W-1957

This beautiful hollowbody electric reproduces both the look and distinctive tone of the model 6120 guitar played by rockabilly legend Eddie Cochran. The single-cutaway G6120W features an arched maple top with maple sides and back. The body and oversized f-holes are bound with multiple white and white/black bindings, and the rock maple neck(which joins the body at the 14th fret) features a 22 fret ebony fingerboard with western-motif engraved block inlays. The electronics consist of P-90 and DynaSonic pickups (in the neck and bridge positions respectively), a 3-way pickup selector, master volume and tone controls, and two pickup-volume controls. The G6120W also a features a polished aluminum Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, a transparent Gretsch pickguard with”Nashville” signpost, and a classic “G” brand on the body.

Stephen Stills Model White Falcon (G6136-1958)

Resplendent with its 24-carat gold-plated hardware and aged -white finish, the G6136-1958 replicates the specs of the Gretsch White Falcon made famous by Stephen Stills. The 17″ wide beauty features maple body construction and a three piece rock-maple neck with a 25-1/2″ scale ebony fretboard. The guitar is lavishly appointed with neo-classic position markers, gold binding on the fretboard, gold and black/white multiple bindings around the body and the oversized f-holes, and a Gretsch “T-roof” logo on the V-shaped headstock. Stills Signature is also inlaid between the 19th and 21st frets. The White Falcon includes dual vintage-style Filtertron pickups with alnico magnets, an adjustable bridge, and a Gretsch Bigsby vibrato.
